The Boys & Girls Club of Milwaukee, in partnership with Herzing University, offers a comprehensive and free CNA training program tailored for high school students. This four-week program meets Wisconsin state and federal requirements, ensuring that students receive quality training in patient care, anatomy, physiology, infection control, and more. The curriculum also covers rehabilitation and restorative care, cultural diversity, safety, patient rights, and specialized care for geriatric and dementia patients.
Students participating in the program will gain practical skills, including the use of personal protective equipment, measuring vital signs, assisting with personal hygiene, positioning patients, and providing care for those with confusion or dementia. They will also learn about ambulation with a gait belt, transferring patients, and performing range-of-motion exercises. The program includes both classroom instruction and hands-on clinical training, held twice a week in the evenings at the Boys & Girls Club’s Ready Center.
To qualify, students must be at least 16 years old and have a minimum GPA of 2.5, be a high school graduate, or achieve a Wonderlic entrance score of 16. Classes run monthly, and additional employment preparation is provided alongside the CNA training. Upon completing the program, students will be eligible to take the Wisconsin CNA certification exam. The program is tuition-free, and all necessary supplies are provided. Interested students must be vaccinated to intern with a medical organization and can register by contacting the Teen Outreach and Recruitment Managers at the Boys & Girls Club of Milwaukee.
